PLEASE HELP INTERMITTENT PROBLEM

I have seen versions of this question asked in different places, and have done alot of searching but don't seem to get a straight answer so I thought I would post my very specific circumstances to see what reaponses I get, so here it goes.

I have an o1 f350 7.3 diesel with edge extreme chip

Ive been running chip on stock.

In 2002 at about 5000 miles my cps went out, and was replaced, then replaced again 13 months ago because of recall. I also had the cruise recall completed 3 or 4 weeks ago. Other than that I have preformed the fix on the door lock actuators that I found here (which solved problem) and that is about all I have done to truck. Here is my problem.

The truck starts fine, idles fine and acts just as it should when sitting. You can start to drive and all of the sudden the SES light comes on and there is no response from the accelerator, after a few seconds (sometimes 2, others longer) the light goes off and accelerator function returns. It doesn't happen all the time, and it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the temp of truck or how long you drive, sometimes it doesn't do it at all. When I had the cruise recall done (about a month ago) the light stayed off and didn't come on for about 2 weeks, then started again. While I was there I bought a spare CPS but have not put it on yet. As I remeber when the first CPS went out, the symptoms were the same, no pedal response but the truck would idle, only when it did it the first time the SES light never went out and the pedal never responded. After the replacement of the first CPS I never had a problem again until 3 months ago.

Another problem I have, that I do not believe is related, is a very wierd shift thing that happens at 20 mph and about 1500 rpms and only there. It will act as if it is shifting to a higher gear but immediately downshift, then try up again, then downshift, if I accelerate past...no problem, if I let off accelerator and slow down...no problem but just at that speed, usually not a problem except when pulling my 5th wheel through a school zone.

Any help is appreciated and I am going to try to have codes read today, if I get anything with that I will post but from what I have read most times with a problem like this you will not get codes.

I would bet your accelerator pedal is bad. They work off of a potentiometer and they can develop a dead spot. Do you have adjustable pedals or fixed? A fixed pedal is not too expensive to replace. The adjustable pedals cost a bit more though.

Most likely not a CPS issue.

i agree on the pedal, it will make the truck run and shift funny because the reading is erratic, i would replace it and retest

It is a fixed pedal, do yall think that this is the cause to both problems? I did take it to Autozone and they threw a reader on it and it came up no code which i suspected it would, the guy suggested that I get a meter at costco and run with it hooked up then when the SES light comes on read the codes quickly to see what was up. I may end up doing this.

I know others have had this problem and was looking to see if I could get a response like "I had the exact problem" I don't have alot of money to chase a problem as I just had a baby.

I do live in a very small town and only drive about 5 miles to and from work and day care so it would not be the worst thing in the world to break down, but if I decide to travel any distance it presents a problem. This is my only mode of transportation with him around so I need to get it remedied soon. Is there anyway to check to see if the pedal is the problem other than replace and see?

Thanks agian for any suggestions.

You will find that 95% of OBD II readers that you can buy at a store will not pull codes on your truck. If you have a laptop you can but Autoenginuity and it will do that and a whole bunch more. Being short on funds is a perfect reason to get it as it will pay for itself in a few uses. Besides you could save yourself from buying parts that are not bad.

If the light has come on, there is a code stored. Hooking up the wrong scanner when the light is on or off won't make a difference. These motors are not OBDII compliant, so the inexpensive code readers just won't work on them.
