ok i have recently purchased an 1980 f100 with manual steering
it has a lot of play in the steering what parts in the steering would cause this and which should be replaced im thinking i should replace all short of the steering gear box or is this were the most of the play would be?
The gear box is a common source of steering slop, so don't rule it out until you get under and check it. Have an assistant wiggle the steering wheel back & forth (only a few degrees each way, like 11:00-1:00 at most) and you crawl around looking for where the movement stops. It SHOULD go all the way out to the rims (at least, if not to the tires), but even tight trucks aren't always THAT tight.
