Ever shelled a starter?
The starter on my '78 F150 (351M/C6) sounded strange for a few starts, then didn't engage, sounded like bad bendix. Purchased a new one, and found on removal that the starter gear was completely shelled- no teeth, shaft only. I took the little dust cover off the trans bellhousing and found the remnants in the bottom. Bumping the flywheel around with the new starter installed showed no problems with the wheel. I've changed a lot of starters out on my vehicles over the years, including a few over 27 years of ownership of this one, but never once for the gear completely gone.
