Fan assembly/bearing is TOASTED

Anybody seen this one before. In a recent thread I feared I blew my Flatty due to an incredibly nasty noise it began to make while on a cruise. I also lost oil pressure during the same event. Still nor sure of why the pressure loss) Today was the first time I had time to do anything else since towing it home and clearing the oil pickup screen and oil change. I had a buddy helping me tear down the replacement motor for the truck today ( another set of eyes and ears ).I started it to let him scope it out and listen, while I sat in emergency shutdown alert and the first thing he could see was the fan wobbling a lot and the noise was out of this world. I let it run for 30 secs and noticed that I ALSO NOW HAVE OIL PRESSURE??? I removed the fan and started it up again and it sounded ok...with oil pressure. I guess I was so worked up at the sounds this thing was making I was afraid I blew something internal and with all the racket, I didn't want to let it run long in order to diagnose anything Check out these photos. of dis- assembled fan hub.

I only looked 2 places for fan assemblies but didnt find a thing.
This also explains the oil spray on the lower rad hoses and frame earlier.
This dont look rebuildable. Is a used fan pully part the best way to go??

You should be able to find a good used truck fan assembly, JobLot may even have new ones. Pretty sure they also sell replacement bushings at some of the parts houses. I hate to ask, but did you ever oil your fan bushings? They don't need much, but they do need some.

PS -- good news overall, right?!

Yea,...real good news all in all. Still going to do the new Flattie moter overhaul.
I have to admit that I could never figure out the shop manuals directions for oiling it and, I over think this stuff all the time. Now that I have it in my hand, close up I can see how easy it is. What I thought was a " SET " screw on th pully turns out to be the cap of the oil hole opening. I am such a bone head

It's a cheap lesson, don't be too hard on yourself! If you're stuck finding one, I may have a source.

it appears that you got lucky in that the main shaft for fan looks ok. (from what i can see) a lot of places show the parts needed, but only carry the rebuild kit. some shopping will find your parts. when it's time to oil, a good synthetic works good for me. put it in fill plug, let er spin for a little bit, then, turn fan so plug is facing down and drain most oil out. this prevents oil from spraying all over. ps--an ounce or so is all you need.
