water pump hell

My water pump went out so I bought a new one to install. When I installed it there was a slight leakage from around the pump, Should I have used a gasket sealant in addition to help prevent this? To make matters worse when I went back to retighten all the bolts thinking this might stop the leakage I broke a bolt while doing so. How much trouble am I in? I believe my pump is stuck on there now.

It is best to use some sealant along with everything and then let it sit and dry before adding coolant and running. Is the pump leaking now that you broke the bolt? If not you might run it for a while near home to see if it is OK to continue using. Otherwise, you may have to pull the pump and fix that broken bolt. It might have snapped off just after the head and you could get it with vise-grips. worst case you might have to drill and tap that thread again (you would probably have to pull the rad, intercooler, etc to get room to do this, not easy but do able).
