I recently parted out a '66 1/2T that yeilded a rear axle with a ID tag as follows: WDM-M
3 . 5 5KA 301
Thetrim tag code is 08 which the book says is 3.50 ratio and that matches the tag on the case. It measures 61 3/4" drum to drum. Without having to take it apart, can anyone tell me what the ring gear diameter is?
I read a post on another forum recently that stated that if the gears remove from the front , it is a 9". If there is a plate on the back, it is a 8.8. This statement confused me a little because I also have a rear end from a '67 Galaxie that has a tag code of WER and the gears remove from the front but the book says that the ring gear measures 8 1/2". In a nutshell, what is the skinny on identifying a 9" ford? Thanks, Steve
The 8.8 does load from the rear and is a "dana" style like a GM. The Ford 8 and 9 load from the front and are a "saginaw" style. Here is a little reading for you, I always tend to reference when junk yard crawling..
Wow, more info than I hoped for. I read the entire site and the extra links. So the important thing for my situation is that even though the ring gear may be under 9", if the housing fits the other measurement and configuration criteria then it's considered a 9"? Steve

If there is a plate on the back, it is a 8.8 = not introduced until the 1980's.

WDM-M = 3.50-1 w/a 9" diameter ring gear. There were some 1961/79 9" rear axles w/a 8 3/4" diameter ring gear (and some 1968/72 9's w/a 9 3/8" diameter ring gear). but this isn't one of them.
WER = Ford 8.7" integral rear axle used in some 1967/80 Passenger Cars.
The WER 8.7" is not an 8.8" rear axle, which was not introduced until 1980 in Passenger Cars, 1983 F100/150's, Bronco's and Econolines.
Integral rear axles (including Ford 8.7" & 8.8" & Dana 44, 60, 60.2, 60.3, 70) have an inspection cover, the Ford 9" does not. Neither does the Ford 8" which was only used in some 1962/80 passenger cars.
btw: The Ford 8 & 9 inch rear axles were actually made by Sterling, not by Saginaw...which is a GM Division.
