I have a 87 f150 4x4x 300, ever since i got this truck the fuel pump relay has given me problems. Have replaced it, cussed it and beat it. I found a short in one of the wires fixed it and still does not work. I have a 87 2 wd that i took the wiring harness off of and it still didnt work. Both harnesses and relay switches work on the 2 wd. I have it bbypassed now, so gas mileage sucks plus it dont ideal when cold.
What am I over looking here?
WHat is causeing this?
The truck runs good. has around 227300.0 miles on it. I swapped the computers from truck to truck. no change on the 4x4. I didnt hook the 4x4's up in the 2 wd tho.
Thanks for reading hopefully someone will have a suggestion to help me.
Can't give you any advice, but my 90 just did the same thing. Replaced the battery, solenoid, starter, had the alternater tested, and gave up. Then tried a test lite on the battery while we pulled wires. Sure enough, the fuel pump relay switch was shorting out the battery after 6-8 hrs. Replaced it, and haven't had any problems...YET.
If replacing it AND bypassing it didn't solve the problem, then MAYBE the relay ISN'T the problem... How about checking the pump? The fuel lines/filter/pressure regulator/injectors? The tank select switch?
It works when I bypass it. I have spliced the wires together and it works fine. I would just like to fine out why it wont work the way its suppose to and to get my gas mileage back.
