Starting issues

Need assistance with a 84 F150. Difficult starting in the AM and randomly throughout the day.

I have replaced air and fuel filters, spark plugs, and starter. Battery and alternator checked out so I have not replaced them, yet. Going to look into distributor, wires, and ignition module ASAP.

I am not a mechanis put have been taking apart and putting back together anything I can get my hands on for a long time. I bought the Haynes Book for guidaince, but really only tells me how to replace and not why to replace.

Any assistance with this issue would be greatly appreciated. I sold my 02 Explorer Sport for a MAN's Truck and don't want to sink tooo much into it. Just want it to run right.

There are a lot of things that could cause hard starting. What motor is in your truck, and do you know what ignition system? If you have the TFI IV with the feedback control carburetor, it could definitely be several things. The way to tell is if your ignition module plugs into the side of your carb, and if your carb has a bunch of wires connecting to it.

If you carb does not have a bunch of wires connecting to it, and your ingnition module is on the Inner Fender (driver's side) then you have a Duraspark II system (more than likely, I forget the connector details to make sure it's the D2), which is a good thing, in my opinion.

My '84 had hard starting problems for years with the TFI IV, and I converted it to a Duraspark II, and that fixed it.

However, in general, in my experience hard starting problems are carb related. Either your carb may need a rebuild, or it may be as simple of your choke not working right.

They more info you can gives us about your truck, the more the guys on here will be able to help.

Truck Info:
1984 Ford F150 5.8 L 351w 2 Barrel 4x4, Reg Cab, LWB, Dual Fuel Tanks

New:
Air and Fuel Filters, Spark Plugs, Starter, and Fuel Pump (added lunch 10/6/10)
Replaced or filled all fluids and oils.

After installing the started last night, I was hopefully for a nice clean start this morning. Nope. So I went back and spoke with the that helped before and he suggested Fuel Pump.

Not sure of the type of ignition system - I will check on that.

Thanks

ctubutis - thank you for the reality check!

Everything on it is original just thought I was helping the 'cause'. But I agreed and am planning to have it looked over a mechanic.

WILLB,

I deleted that after it had been out there for around 60 seconds, I sometimes get in a hurry
and want to say stuff before I think about it. As I thought about it later, I figured that's why
you're out here....

No worries.

I come from a Ford Family, my granfather rebuilt almost every for car known and drove an 1980 F100 which my uncle this has.

Just trying to do my part.

You intentions were spot on, I will find out what wrong then determine if I have the time and ability to fix/replace. I dont believe in temporary fixes so I figure I would start replacing items I knew I could.

On that note, would I make sense to have a 2 barrel card rebuilt, or install a 4 barrel.
There is a local mechanic that I have been refered to have it rebuilt.
