thanks for the help guys . well i'll check the specific stuff later. but its a 5.0L efi , and its an ext. cab , 2Wd , and it has the Aod tranny. i use it just as a daily driver, but it has been used for very light stuff (refrigerators, other trannys, metal junk) lol. well i do have a little experience , and i'm willing to take on everything you can do outside with a bunch of tools. Lol. but tomorrow i'll check that other stuff. do i make a new post ?
i dont see why you would need a new post, this thread should be fine.
i also have a '96 5.0 ex-cab 2wd, post some pics up of that bad boy.
so far i have been corecting all the po's mistakes, my only mod so far has been exaust and accel wires, cap and rotor. i can already see a big inprovement in take-off and overall drivability..
There is no way in hell that thing has an AOD...maybe an AODE or an E4OD. Bump the timing up. The 6 Litre tuneup is called that because the guy who came up with it's screenname is sixlitre. Also, he's got a 96 they make programmers for that.....
yea, im thinking most probably e4od as well.....trans code will tell for sure....
im a firm believer in the 6 liter tune up!!!!! best 130 bucks i ever spent!!
run a bottle of seafoam in about 3/4 tank of gas to help clean out the injectors, run a half bottle down the brake booster vacuum line and kill the motor, let sit for 20 minutes and crank back up to remove carbon buildup......lol, make sure the wind is blowing towards the neighbors, it will smoke its *** off for a few minutes, dont worry, its just burning the carbon out......
put a new fuel filter on it(you will need the special red tool i think it is)
check, and double check for vacuum leaks(this should be done BEFORE the tune up)
DO NOT listen to any idiot friends you may have trying to tell you the 6 dollar spark plugs are good....they are crap....just use the good old fashion copper cores from motorcraft or autolite ONLY !! these trucks run best with just plain old oem style plugs
bump your timing up to about 12-14 base timing.....some trucks handle 14 no problem, some can only go 12......i started off with 14, but dropped down to about 12 1/2 due to a ping on hot days......you will just have to play around with that to find the sweetest spot for yours.......
these things will not make the truck race ready.....but they will bring it back to better then new running condition assuming all the sensors, valve train components, and rings are in good working order, you will be pleased(as will your wallet at the pump) with the results you get from these simple low cost upgrades/maintenance items
EDIT: im sorry, idiot may have been harsh....lets call them possibly misinformed, lol
almost forgot......how many miles on the truck ??
if you have any slop in the timing chain this can affect performance adversely as well, more so then anything else really....
if your over 100,000 miles, i would seriously consider a timing chain swap, you can get a good double roller set up for around 40-50 bucks......the historical use of the truck will have a lot to do with this......
if the truck was used for a lot of towing or hauling heavy loads/abused, or raced, i would say anything over 75,000 needs a new chain......and if over 150,000 regardless of history go ahead and swap it out
EDIT: this isnt to say the truck wont run just fine for the next 10 years or 100,000 miles.....but if your looking to maximize your fuel economy and performance, you need to consider this early in the game
Meh, to each his own on the programmer. he's lucky he's got OBD2, there's a heck of a following for those and the ones available are like a pocket-sized TwEECer. I agree with Mark3 about the plugs...stay away from anything Bosch and everything PLATINUM.
Why is he lucky its OBDII? I would rather have my 95 with OBDI / EEC-IV. Its still MAF.
The 96 actually came with Motorcraft single plats from the factory. I would get what the sticker under the hood says to get.
He is right about the 96 factory plats, my 96 came that way been using ever sence. if your on a budget do a tune up, i went with FMS wires, MSD cap set, and coil. the I6 tube will be hard to find, but it helps i have one !
Hm, didn't know they were factory that year..... I've had nothin but trouble with plats in the past and avoid them...but that's just me. What does his truck being a 96 have anything to do with it being MAF? My 95 is MAF as well. in terms of scanning ability and tweaking the EFI system I'd much rather have the OBD2, you're not spending 600 bucks on a binary editor that's worth a damn. To each his own though.
well, it looks like an aod , the e40d is larger right ? i think that ones on my bro's truck cuz his is alot larger than my tranny. n it has 95k and hasnt really towed. and it just got in a small crash so i dont wanna take some photos because it looks like its making a face. should i do the seafoam ? i dont think it needs it right now. whats a programmer ? and here are the codes
BRAKE : B , BODY : 464 , TRANS : U , AXLE : H9 , TAPE : 2 , SPRINGS : L4G
are those the codes or things you guys need to find out what stuff it has ? these are off the sticker on the door
