i have a 72 truck w/ a 302. i want to make the switch to electronic ignition. i hear a lot about the pertronix kit but i see that crane cams and mallory also have one. my question is does anyone know which one is the best?
I haven't tried all of them, but I've got the Pertronix in both my '65 and '70 F-100s with 302s. They were fairly easy to install and have worked flawlessly.

ford duraspark is the best option IMO. parts are available everywhere, they are cheaper than the options you list, they have a bertter track record, and they have some features that most aftermarkets don't have like the spark retard while cranking that makes it easier to start a hot engine or a built one with a lot of compression. i run them in all my cars and you can scavenge them for about 75.00 and they are on e-bay all the time as kits (don't go jumping on the "deal" one guy offersfor like 150 or 175. yes his has a rebuilt distributor but he uses Kragen specials and you can get those for 30.00 yourself). buy the 75.00 kit on ebay and then use the used distributor for a core at your local parts place if you absolutely want a fresh distributor. keep in mind the electronic distributors don't wear like old points units because there is no side loading of the shaft. these are good for at least 200K and most of the ones i get are pretty nice. it is entirely possible that some of the original type modules are hard to get but you would want to use the blue strain relief duraspark II anyway as they are he good one. the early ones did have some problems as this stuff was developed and only fit a year or two and are possibly obsolete now but my bet is the guy was full of dog doo and its just more ebay hype. just because a guy typed it does not make it true. there is one guy who sells carburetors and his auctions always say that these are getting hard to find. anyone ever have trouble finding a stock replacement carb for a run of the mill vehicle? he isn't selling special stuff just used old carbs from cars and trucks. like i said just ebay hype. hawkrod
