Hey guys, my '05 started idling real rough on saturday night, smelling like gas, and I could smell the cats getting hot and burning off a lot of raw fuel, it had a dead miss in at least one cylinder at idle, but would clear up if you revved it. I took it Sunday to O'reilly's and borrowed their scan tool, I came up with p0175 bank #2 rich code and p0307 cylinder # 7 misfire code. I took it back to the garage and swapped #7 coil pack with #6 coil pack, cleared the codes and drove it, got back scanned again, both codes came back, it's not the COP. Then I switched the #7 and #6 spark plugs (I just did the plugs less than 1K ago) #7 plug insulator was pretty black, but the electrode was clean, and it was still firing, not fouled. Cleared codes and drove it again, got back and scanned it again, codes p0175 and p0307 are back again, it's not the plug. I called O'reilly's for a price on an injector, $25 in stock my price.
I thought I had read somewhere on FTE about Ford extending the warranty on the injectors for the '05's as they were known problem children, so I logged on and searched, sure enough I found a post about Customer Satisfaction campaign 07M08, injectors warranteed to 120K miles or 11 years, my '05 has about 93K on it, sweet!
Called the stealership I used to work at 4 or 5 years ago yesterday, they got me an appointment today. My wife is driving the Lightning while the Expy is at the shop!
If they try to charge me for diagnosis I'm gonna kick them in the nads! I'm not paying anyone to tell me what I already know! Just raising awareness, if your expy is running rough and throwing codes, it may be the injectors and under warranty!! I believe it applies to '05's only.
Well, I got the expy back last night and have no complaints! They confirmed my diagnosis of a leaking injector on #7 cylinder, they replaced it and some circuit breaker? Don't know what that was, and they changed the oil and filter, all with no charge to me! I had smelled the oil on the dipstick and didn't get a whiff of any gas smell, but I'm glad they changed it anyway to be safe. She's good as new! Are there any Ford Techs in here that can elaborate on the whole procedure? I'm just curious what the circuit breaker they replaced was for, and if they always change the oil with the injector program? I didn't get a chance to quiz the service writer about it, as I picked up the truck after 5PM and only the front desk gal was there.
When an injector leaks, all of that extra fuel can work it's way past the piston rings and down into the crankcase as the engine sits off. It was great of them to err on the side of caution and do the oil/filter change. As to the breaker, who knows, it could've been an unrelated issue that they discovered while your truck was in there.
Our 05 had the dreaded injector failure, same symptoms as you describe. I was told by the dealer that the warranty on the injectors is extended 120k, even on the injector that was just installed.
I called the service writer yesterday about the "circuit breaker" just because I was curious, he didn't have a clue what it was. Searched online at Silver State Ford (part # on my paperwork is F2UZ14526P), and it comes up as a 20 amp mini-fuse. Anyone know what it's for?
That's just one of those tiny yellow fuses that plug into your fuse box. Maybe they popped it when crawling around under the hood.
Yeah, got to thinking about it, a few weeks ago I noticed that my power ports in the center console weren't working, I wonder if he changed the fuse because he couldn't power his scan tool up from them. The small PDA-type scan tool has to be plugged in if the batteries are low. I didn't have anything to plug in and try them, I'll do that tonight.
