I hope I am posting this in the right forum. I have a1977 F250 2wd. It has power steering and the it leaks like there is no tomorrow. It is also real sloppy feeling. I would like to here some options about what to do with this. I think I an looking at a rebuilt unit:
Can I rebuild this? Is it worth the hassle or (I have I have basic tools but would I need a press or puller set)??
Prices on rebuilt units?
Good, reliable place to get one (west coast here)
Thanks for any help
I just had one leaking on a 95 F-150, checked all the shops, no one would rebuild it, could buy a new one , very pricey. Finaly found a used one at a wreckers for $125.00 and changed it myself. It's not that big of a job, you don't need any special tools. One thing to check is the pitman arm, can be some difference.
I have a 78 F150 4x4. My stering gear took a dump 3 years ago and I rebuilt it myself. The only special tools you need are a pickle fork which I bought, and a pitman arm puller. I paid a local shop $10 to pull the arm after I removed the stering gear. The overhaul kit I bought at NAPA for less that $20. It consist of several seals, bushings, spacers and a set of instructions. I removed mine, but I think you can rebuild without removing it from the truck. I'm certain you can do the lower half if thats where your oil dump is coming from.
Davee, yours is power steering too. I don't mind removing from truck. After you rebuilt it did it turn out all right? otherwords did it fix the leaks. Also was your steering sloppy?
Thanks for the help
dads77- Yes it was power steering. No leaks since the repair. My steering was somewhat sloppy and the repair took much of the slop out, but not all. It's an easy fix, just cumbersome because the box is so big and heavy.
My unit failed all at once. I was returning to Phoenix from a fishing trip in SW Colorado. Backed my pop-up trailer into the garage upon arrival, unhooked trailer, pulled out in the street and made a U-turn to park in driveway. It then dumped about a pint of oil all at once. There was no oil where the truck was previously parked while unhooking. It was July and 115 degrees here at the time. Not sure if that was a factor.
I just priced one for my 79 f250 at checker...about 250.00 for a "cardone" rebuilt, after talking to a couple alignment shops this is the rebuilt brand they recommend...
I also went the junkyard route...has lasted about 9 years, with only some minor seepage through the seals over this time period...Im just tired of messing with it and I hate leaks, so Im saving up for the "new" rebuilt...the waranty is a nice plus as well...
