I've been meaning to ask about this since last winter, but since it was really mild, it never was an issue. I'm hoping to figure this out prior to snow this year. When I drive my truck in 2h with the hubs locked in, over about 20mph there's a rattle coming from the transfer case. I have the SMF and I know it's not that noise, it's definitely like a chain rattle or something. Can those chains be tightened, and if so, how? If not, what else could help, or should I just look into rebuilding? It still works right now, but it sounds like something will get worn out or broken. I know I can just run it without the hubs locked, but my daily drive in the normal winter covers all different types of snow and ice and such, so I like the option. Thanks!
Could also be a bad u-joint in the drive shaft or axle. When I broke the spyder gear pin in the rear I coulda swore that I detonated the T-case. It tends to transfer vibration if something is wrong and can make some weird sounds.
I've drained and filled the transfer case a month or so back but it didn't help. I'll check the u-joints and what not, but the whole driveline is new. I've investigated this and I'm pretty sure it's inside the case though.
Yeah you could have a bad u joint in the front. They sieze all the the time from not getting used for months at a time. Jack the front of the truck up in 2wd lock the hubs and have someone spin the wheels and see where noise is coming from
