Noise. I had read so much about these synchronizers going bad and I have some noise somewhere under the hood that I would like to make sure its not that part. You cannot hear it when it's idleing only at certin RPM's mainly under load..very slight rough idle but otherwise runs ok..
To know if gear is bad, you need to pull it. I marked exactly the cam position when I pulled it with a paint pen. Pretty simple. The shaft turns a bit when you pull it. If you have any wear on the gear, you should replace the shaft, it will fail at some point and the engine will fry.
If I still had a 3.0 I'd rig up a kill circuit to shut off the motor if there is no input from the sensor. If the sensor isn't turning, neither is the oil pump. The engine will continue to run until it eats itself. Extremely poor design.
