I have 2000 F250 with the 7.3. Right now it is taking a longer cranking time before it fires up. I recently replaced the glow plug relay (very bad, had to cross it to start) as well as all of the glow plugs (a few tested bad, figured I should replace them all). After doing that it went from cranking for several seconds every time, to being most of the time with a few very quick, normal start-ups. I'm happy that it starts better with the new glow plugs, but I'm a little concerned at the fact that winter is coming and it still cranks for a little longer. Any suggestions?
Also, just to eliminate the small things, the fuel, air and oil filters have all been recently changed. Some of the times that it cranks hard it blows white smoke for a few seconds. Some of my quick start-ups have been the first one of the day, so it isn't always the fact that the truck has been sitting.
Thanks alot for the help!
How long are you waiting to start after you turn the key on? The glow plugs can stay on for up to 2 minutes depending on temperature. I would try that and see if it makes any difference.
have you tried taking the terminals off your starter and cleaning them up with a wire brush? be very very careful not to twist your terminals out of your solenoid...only suggesting because i did that to mine....my truck was starting hard it seemed, had brand new batteries in it as well as new glow plugs and relay. oil, fuel and air filters. i put a new starter in it and now it starts like a four cylinder hyundia low on compression. effortlessly. the morning smoke is normal though, especially if your running late in the morning and crank it right up.
I usually start it after the 'wait to start' light goes out, I even tried cylcling it three times and no difference. I will try to clean the starter terminals, even though it was off a few months ago.
