289's are great little engines(yes they are small but......they are great regardless). They go and go and go.
All my pickups have 302s in them. Wouldn't trade them for anything. They last forever and a simple upgrade of the rod bolts or better yet aftermarket rods these babys will turn!! lol.
One of these days Ill get a truck that has an FE in it but until then the little 302 actually doesn't have much trouble at all carrying around my 6,000 pound antique tractor. Even with it loaded down that much it still gets better mileage than a 460.
When I say one day ill have a truck with an FE engine thats what I mean. I want a truck that came stock with it because I won't take my 302 out and transplant it with something else. Just kinda my preference I guess, I like trucks that have the correct size engine they left the factory with.

289 & 302 use the same pistons but the 289 uses shorter rods and of course a shorter stroke crank .
289 blocks have a shorter skirt so a longer stroke 302 crank is not desirable .
The older 289 & 302 two piece seal cranks will fit in a newer one piece seal roller block if the rear oil slinger lip is ground off .
Most stock heads have terrible flow numbers .
A 289 crank and rods in a roller block (w/ roller cam & lifters) with a little exhaust porting would be a feisty combo , but not for a full frame pick up truck .
As it is a 200 or less horsepower 302 with low torque numbers is not the ideal motor .

The 221,260, and early 289's had a 5 bolt bell housings

I know about the Marauder , but not the 383, when did it come out and what was it found in. I had some cousins in the ozarks that allways had to have a 430 marauder for there dirt track racing , that was a long time ago.OOP's sorry. JIM

i would personally just go with a 302w, unless you already have a 289, or you can get a really nice 289 HIPO
otherwise just find a nice 302w, the reason i love these engines so much is the amount of power for its size, a 460 weighs around 720 pounds, a 302w with a aluminum intake weighs around 430 pounds, so you save about 300 pounds of weight with a small block 302w vs. a 460, and you get the benefit of the Mustang world for aftermarket parts, plus if you go automatic you can go with a 4-speed AOD automatic transmission, and gain some MPG numbers,
so basically you can do a lot more with a 302w for the money, of course you can sink money into any engine, but its easier when Mustang guys pay for the parts, then you can buy the parts off them when they think of upgrading and they've already done everything with the 302w, so they have the aftermarket parts and knowledge,
I've grown up with the 302w, I've loved the engine in every application its been in, from Broncos to Cougars, to Mustangs, to Thunderbird's to E-series Vans, and F-series trucks, and the Panther sedans, its a great engine, and i am a fan,

smaller version of the 430 in mercury for 58 not sure other years. Had 2 versions with 312 and 330 horses. How bout the 400 horse super marouder with tri power? BIG power for 1958

They called it the "super marader" but I don't remember the tri power, but then that was a long time ago. They ran it a lot until one of them rolled it one time to many and had to put it out in the scrap yard.
