filter leaks a typical prob? Rough start cont.

I meant to post this with an earlier thread. I just changed my fuel filter (to check for air intrusion, thanks for the tip FESTUS it was full of fuel) now it is leaking at what appears to be the big ol nut at the base of the filter. (not the water seperator screw). I tightened it a notch, still leaks. Found a leak at the same location on the previous filter, tightened it, leak stopped...
I dont want to over tighten the darn thing. This leak didnt start til after abtou 50 miles or so... Is this a typical trouble area? Or am I just lucky..haha
I am trying to trace down the source of my long hard starts. It fires up after preheat, runs for a sec, (this is after I have the pedal to the floor, I let off as soon as the motor catches) then dies... Then preheat again, then crank for abotu 5-10 seconds... she catches, runs rough for 5 seconds, then runs like a champ after that. I am fit to be tied. Jery

By "big ol nut at the base" do you mean the entire sediment bowl? You know, the thing that you swap from the old filter to the new one, and that has the water sensor and drain in it? IIRC there's a rubber o-ring on that thing that's supposed to seal against the filter element, and yes I'm pretty sure it's not uncommon for them to leak there. I personally use a 1-piece filter, looks like a regular Motorcraft FL-1A oil filter but it has a drain and a sensor port built in its bottom, I did have to transfer the sensor itself from the old bowl to this new filter but that was no big deal...

Yes, exactly as you mentioned, the leak is at the sediment bowl. Do you know what filter mfg. and p/n you used? Since this was the 2nd one that leaked, I would like to go to a one piece fliter/seperator. Any thoughts on the rest of my "hard to start" post? Thanks, jery

Or go to NAPA and leave the first 3 off of the above numbers.

Actually, that would be wrong ... It would be to drop the first digit!

Napa's number for the Wix (Napa Gold):
33217 = 3217
33417 = 3417
33617 = 3617!

I was wrong. the leak I am having is from the top of the filter housing asm. It is leaking from under what looks like an electric connection cap (that doesnt want to come off). What is this rascal...? I will start another thread cuz I got some other issues (with my truck-haha) that I need some help with. Thanks for the P/Ns I may have to replace the housing/asm. jery

Oh, I know that - what's going on is the connector for the fuel heater element inside the filter head is leaking. Now, there are two types of leaks there - the easy fix one is where fuel is leaking between the plastic plug and the aluminum filter head, the bear is if you see fuel inside the plastic plug around the metal connector itself. To verify which issue you have you need to unplug the harness off that connector - you pretty much have to pry it off, the rubber likes to get stiff and don't wanna flex and let go as it should when you pull on it.

thanks for that info. Yes, the connector on top of the filter head is hard as a rock. I will be checking that one out this week. I would not have guessed. So, can you seal the leaks? I will do a search on the forum.jery

Yup, both locations can be resealed. If the leak is between the plastic and the aluminum housing all you need to do is remove the filter element, then use a large wrench to remove the fitting it threads onto from the filter head, and then the plastic connector down through the hole in the aluminum housing till the entire heater assembly falls out the bottom - then you simply replace the o-ring you see around the plastic connector, and reinstall everything back in place. Now if the leak is inside the connector between the plastic and the metal tab then it's more involved, you still do the procedure I just described but in addition to it you gotta disassemble the heater itself, and that I don't recall exactly how it's done...

I pried (prised) off the fuel heater connector. the leak is coming from inside the connector. I will disassemble as you said and have a look. thanks, I will post back my results. Jery

Festus, no clue - I've read the large one between the connector and the filter head is a dealer-only part, I managed to shoe-horn a #111 injector o-ring in its place tho (that's all I had when the darn thing started leaking) which is not something I'd recommend everyone else does but in a pinch it can save the day... The small one I haven't had to deal with just yet, so I'd like to hear the size of that as well.

Would not surprise me if they were custom sized.

If I have to I'll pull the one on the 7.3 I'm stuffing in my 86 and pull it apart and run into town to my buddys seal house and see what he can come up with. It's not leaking and I really don't want to mess with it though, but I would like to have them on the shelf.

Hopefully someone knows.
