TRANS PAN!!

Why is it the simple things seem to give you the most headaches?? I had a trans fluid leak around the back of the trans pan so I fig I may a well change fluid and filter and put in a new gasket at the same time. I tried tighting the bolts before hand but no joy. I drained the fluid cleaned all the surfaces and installed the pan new gasket and filter. Low and behold the dang thing leaked worse!! tried to tighten again , no good! I had seen where they had used RTV on the gasket before so I cleaned all the surfaces and layed down some clear sealer. I left it skin overnite and filled in the morning. Things looked good took it for ride looked good ! came home slide some cardboard underneath and checked about 5hrs later and a dang puddle!! The only thing I came come away with now is the pan must be warped! Has anybody had this happen? I also used a torque wrench to evenly tighten the bolts. So am I going to need a new pan?

The rubber gasket is reusable for a while but eventually it does need to be replaced. Things I'd check:
  • clean off the RTV/silicone
  • inspect the rubber gasket and replace if necessary
  • check pan lip surface
  • check fluid level (not overfilled)

In particular on the third item...make sure the mount holes are not cupped. You may need to use a hammer and dolly to gently flatten the area around the mounting hole. Take a straight edge and see if your pan is flat.

It shouldn't take a whole lot of pressure to seal the pan. It's really just a drip tray so it's not under pressure or anything. Make sure the pan and the transmission sealing surface is clean. Then clean it again and you should be good. Don't overtighten the bolts. Good that you used a torque wrench, the threads strip easy.

Hope this helps.

Wow, me personally never heard of that problem but in order for your pan to get warped your trans-fluid had to get smokin hot too, I would think.. The only thing I can think of is somehow you pinched the gasket around the bolt holes but heres a bump for more senarios.

Make sure you are using a gasket from the Dealer. Parts Store gaskets are known to leak. Been there.....
AND DON'T OVER TIGHTEN

Also check that gear selector shaft seal is not leaking and oil is traveling back and down the pan. I've had my Autometer trans temp sender, that is installed in the pressure test port and in same general location, seep and oil ran down the gasket and dripped.

The Ford gasket has metal inserts in the bolt holes. Helps protect from over tightening. IF you find you pan is jacked up, let me know because at some point next week I am going to have one you can have.

Hey Smokie,

I have this exact same problem! What did you torque the bolts too? I was told 12#s, but that has not fixed the problem.

Negative, Ghostrider.

RTV of ANY kind is nothing but a bad idea on transmission pan gaskets.

Unless it's an OEM gasket, those plush gaskets from the parts stores are crap and it's probably why you had a problem. I had the same problem, even torqued it down to specs and it STILL made a mess! I took it down and well what-da-ya-know... it warped the edge of my pan because the bolts pulled on the pan ONLY at the holes. I straightened out the edge of my pan and stuck the OEM gasket back in there and I was good to go!

Whatever the paper that came with it said... it was a CarQuest filter kit and I think it was something like 12-15ft/lbs.
