hi, i am new to the site and am enjoying it so far. i have a concern regarding my 1977 ford f-250 2wd regular cab long box. the body on the truck is in good shape except for a few dents and some rust on the box but it is an f-250 2wd with a straight 6 and a 4 speed. my dad has a 1976 ford f-250 highboy 4x4 with a junk body but bullet proof driveline. it has a 428cj/c6/np-205, and dana 60's at both ends. i am concidering pulling the body off my 77 and putting it on the 76 frame but i am being told it will not work because the 2wd frame is skinnier than the 4x4 frame. i am not sure about this issue so i am asking you guys for some help in enlightening me on how it works. if i could swap bodies it would save me a whole lot of time and effort instead of modifying the 2wd to a 4x4 with a big block and an auto.any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
diesel-kid
the cab and nose should be a direct swap.the most you would need to do is drill 2 holes in the rear of the cab for the body mounts. The holes should already be marked from the factory with a small dimple in the floor. The bed is a little more involved.the highboy frame is narrower in the rear, you will have to drill and sleve new holes or make brackets for the frame that will line up with existing bed bolt holes.Try a search for highboy bed swap or something along those lines.I know a few people on here have done it and have pics of it. good luck, and post some pics!
thanks airborne...i am debating doing a 4wd conversion and staying with the straight 6. i did not realize how reliable these motors are and that they can provide quite a bit of torque. what is involved in doing the 2wd to 4x4 conversion? the usual stuff like a front diff, transfer case, and different tailshaft are the obvious things, but is there anything i'm missing? i know i would have to get the rear driveshaft shortened and find a front shaft that would fit, and i am wondering if a stock 4x4 driveshaft would fit? i don't see why not. again any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks,
