i did a cummins conversion into my 76 f-250. now i'm looking at a 1993 diesel zf 5speed to plug into my part time 4 wheel drive divorced t-case. does anyone know if this will work??
Not real sure about the ZF, but if its a 2wd tranny, you should be able to have a short shaft made to connect the two, like I did with my NV4500. Hope you got the slip yoke with the trans or have a short shaft made with slip splines if it's a flange. Remember to figure in about 5 degrees of misalignment while keeping the tranny and transfer case parallel, to keep the U-joints happy.
thanks for the reply bendog. trans i was looking at is 4x4.
i got in over my head with the 91 e4od that is in it now. too much going on for me. so now i'm stuck on what kind of manual trans to put in.
nv4500 or a zf?? i've found both 4x4 around my area.
not sure what i would be better with in the long run, or what is the more reasonable one for me as i have limited tools, space and time to get it running before the snow starts falling. also did you say you kept your divorced t-case with the nv4500? i heard that wouldn't work?
The trans you use has to be 2wd, if you want to keep your divorced NP205. If you can convert the trans to 2wd with a tailshaft and housing that may be an option. Much easier to start with a 2wd trans. I had to modify my t-case linkage to come up out of the tunnel on the right side of the trans with a pivot rod setup, but I kept my divorced NP 205 with a 2wd NV4500.
The Dodge NV4500 (as opposed to the chebby) has a few stronger parts and is more desirable, as well as different ratios if it came behind a Cummins. Along with this added strength, you get a weak fifth gear arrangement in any NV4500, basically it'll hold as long as you dont lug it or tow heavy, frequently, in fifth, up steep long hills at top speed with a pumped up Cummins.
As far as the ZF, I dont know anything about them, other than I see mostly NV's behind Cummins, probly because they came from the factory that way. I got mine with the donor truck I bought, so in it went. I have heard the ZF shifts nicely.
