Blackstone Reports

OK guys, here are the two reports from my long summer trip. I guess everythings OK but the amount of fuel in the oil went up and the potassium is high, what's that from? coolant, right? They are telling me not to worry about the iron and lead, but that's my engine wearing out right? The later report was from a sample taken after a number of high passes pulling that fiver (17Klbs M or L). I don't think I will ever work the truck harder than during that 5000 miles. I probably won't have another report done until next summer. I don't drive it much when I'm not on a trip. Anyway, if anyone has a comment I'd like to hear it. Sorry, I'm on my laptop and can't seem to get it loaded opened.

Actually looks great to me.. can't explain the fuel dilution tho.

should have been low with all the towing..

That report is just fine. My last report potassium was 8. Lead for me was 5.

Your iron was much lower than mine. I think mine had to work much harder than yours because of my gearing.

My only concern is your fuel in the oil, again not too bad according to Ford.

I think you bought this truck used? More than likely it has to do with the previous owners break in of the motor.

I asked about this earlier and most people said there wasn't a whole lot of break in. Someone reccomended to hook up the heaviest thing I could to it and find the steepest, longest hill to climb once I hit around 5000 miles but other than that there isn't much to do. Comments?

Well, don't know if that was me, but that is exactly what I would and have done.

But alot less the 5K miles. I pull a 10K plus load for 600 miles when I had 600 miles on the ODO.

My last report with about the same miles and conditions as Stanley had .5% for fuel.

I truely beleive that you need to seat the rings on this motor. Maybe a myth but that is my thoughts.

Not to highjack, but here was my last report.

and my two reports (5k miles each) are 2.5% dilution not towing much, and 1% towing almost all of the miles. both were mostly highway miles, or long stretches of 2000 rpm or more..

I bought it with 4000 miles on it. Guy had 3 of them, this one didn't get used much. By the time I had 5000 on it I was towing north for summer. That's as formal as my break in was.

Just got my first report back. 5000 miles on the oil, 10,000 miles on the engine. The iron, aluminum, and silicon were high, but the engine is still breaking in. Fuel dilution was less than 0.5% with a little towing. The TBN still looked great at 7.2. I'm using non-CJ4 15w-40 Royal Purple. Flashpoint was 425F. I'm liking the Royal Purple.

You should be using the CJ-4 rated oil and there is no need for the TBN as you cannot run extended intervals any longer with the newer diesels.

The DPF is coming off in the next 500 miles and I have had many conversations RP engineers that support my use, I am not concerned. The TBN is a great piece of information about the amount of additive still active in the oil. At 7.2 my used oil is better than some new oils straight out of the bottle.

I would go to synthetic oil and that will bring down wear numbers a little. Otherwise change the oil more often when doing hard pulls. How many miles are on the truck?

If you're asking me (the OP), the truck has 27000 or so. The 1st change on the report was with 3600 miles between changes, the second at just a little over 5000. How much difference would synthetic make? I guess I could change it sooner but truth is I'm probably not gonna see that kind of trip again. Even if I went back to Alaska it wouldn't get the workout it got this summer. If I was gonna do one or the other IE: go to 4000 mile changes or go to synthetic which would do the most for the increase in cost?

Well you can go synthetic and do a Blackstone report at 5k and see how much difference it makes. There are folks that run 10k without a problem. I would reduce that if heavy towing. I routinely run 10k with M1 in my gas motors. Synthetic is great at reducing wear. The high pressure properties are better. It has other benifits as well such as more stable viscosity and cold flow properties. As much as these beasts hold in oil the less often you can change it the better for you.
