how does backspacing numerically work? The higher the number, the farther in the wheel well? or vice versa?

The smaller the number, the more the wheel will stick out.

An 8" wide wheel with a 4" backspacing will be "closer in" than the same 8" wide wheel with a 3" backspacing.
