1991 Explorer Stall Test
I recently bought a beautifully maintained 1991 Explorer from a friend, besides aged paint it is as if it just rolled off the factory floor.
I have some slipping in all gears and want to do a stall test to see if I can get by with putting in a new torque converter and not having to rebuild the tranny, but can't find specs anywhere, not even in the factory manual. Trans fluid clean and filled to spec.
Also, any additional info on stall tests? Is a less then spec RPM always a sure determination that the converter is the culprit, etc.?
Thanks - Lou
You have an A4LD in the 91, if it is the original and has more than 120K on it, it will be due for overhaul. I have never seen a torque converter failure on this series.
Doing a stall test can drastically heat up the transmission and if it is marginal, that indeed could be its death knoll.
I would gauge the line pressures for properly analyze of the problem.. Philip
