I've got a 2004 F-350 S.C. diesel 4x4. My question is I heard a noise in the front while turning tight into a parking spot. When I got out I noticed that the hubs were on lock not auto. I switched them over to auto and the noise went away. Now why have auto and lock If you have 4wd shift on the fly and what does It do in lock if the **** on the inside Is in 2wd?
Your auto hubs are (typically) vacume operated. If you knock off one of the lines, your hubs won't auto lock so,,,, Ford gives you the option to manually lock the hubs!
Probably the noise you heard was the axle cv/univ joints binding because you were on pavement.
The shift on the fly **** does two things. I causes the transfer case to shif into 4 wheel drive and it locks up your front hubs. Manually locking your hubs will cause your front axles to turn and also turn your front drive shaft and the front drive portion of your transfer case.
