Interior Color code

Where do I find the interior color code on my '81. I thought it was on the door tag but I don't see it. I'm probably blind... I think mine is nutmeg but I need the code to get matched vinyl dye. Thanks!

there may also be a safety compliance code sticker on the passenger side of the block, but it's probably faded away. and maybe one inside the glove box door.

It's on the driver's side door jamb, if you can take a pic of your sticker and post it that'd
help.

It should look something like this:

The interior color is in the three digit BODY code on the safety certification sticker on the cab. Driver's side "B" pillar, just below the door stricker bolt.

It will be the second letter in the code.

Nutmeg is code T
Fawn is code U

Ahh yes, I knew it was there, I just didn't think to check the body code. It's nutmeg, now I have a good dash but it's red and I want to color match it. Anyone had any luck with this color? I'm having a hard time finding vinyl dye, one place will custom tint to match interior code, but they warned me it often doesn't match too well.

I have heard good things about SEM plastic & vinyl paint, plenty of info in the archives.

I've used SEM and had really nice results. They don't have a color anywhere close to nutmeg though. I think I'll chance the custom tinted and hope for the best. Even if it's sort of close it's better then nothing.

Search these archives (the last year's worth) IIRC somebody got a fawn or nutmeg mix
from them not too long ago.

Using SEM, If the supplier you purchase from can color match and if they are any good at all it will be a near perfect match ... I just had a local house mix some for me and you cannot tell the difference, I took my dash (not dash pad) after scrubbing real good with Incredible Pink and lots of water, they used the hidden areas under the instrument cluster where the color was factory original without fade or anything.

They did the color match so perfect you cannot even tell that it's only partially painted as a test ... I have had dozens of people look at it, hold it in their own hands and I even pointed out the area and most say BULL.... it isn't painted, however I have several witnesses that saw it sprayed!

It's been about 4 months since it was done, I cannot scratch it with my fingernails (they are like steel chisels), So far I am very impressed, and that is something that is extremely hard to do with me!

I have a picture, but it's worthless, you cannot see anything that shows it's been painted, I'll have before and after when I do it all!

Remember cleanliness is one of the most important parts of a good solid paint job that'll last!

-Enjoy

Thanks for the info. I will try the color match SEM, I have used the off the shelf stuff with great results. Just never tried the custom tint, should be as good. Aside from a really good cleaning with solvent, I also use the adhesion promoter.

You must scrub with soap and water before solvent.

SEM recommends the use of their 39362 soap wash first to remove organics, then their 38354 Plastic/Leather prep solvent to remove silicones ...

I was told any good soap and a good scrubbing of all nooks and crannies will work in place of their soap.
The 38354 Plastic/Leather prep solvent is required!

Also, if it's already colored, adhesion promoter is not recommended, adhesion promoter is only used on NEW bare plastic!

-Enjoy

Good to know! Always nice to hear from those who have had success with a project, or failure for that matter. Thanks!

At least Red is a good color to tint with brown. There is some red in brown, so it should come out satisfactory. May be a shade darker. The best color though is light gray. The original color of the plastic before it's colored.

The only time I've ever had trouble with Sem is with very badly deteriorated plastic, or with faberic.

I picked up some custom mix today. I don't think I'll get to try it for a week or 2 but if it goes well I think I'll try the kick panels.

In the middle of a restore myself and I can't say enough good things about SEM products. Call them up and give them your code (nutmeg) and I promise you they will get you some paint mixed up that is a dead on match! I am thoroughly impressed with how well they matched my fawn colors ( fawn and med fawn)
