(03' Explorer 4.0 v-6) Overheated and warped the heads. Had the heads rebuilt and reinstalled them. When the engine was started, loud clattering is heard coming from both cylinder heads. I was told this is normal until the lifters fill with oil and it quiets down and should take 5 miniutes. Well, I ran it for about 45 mins (ideling) and its loud as ever. Never got quiet.
Should I continue to run it or is there something wrong? Help is appreciated.
Maybe you put the head gasket's on upside down? That can plug some holes. Not always, but on some engines it can, a.nd they will go on either way. I'm not familiar with the setup of the 4.0L. Are they adjustable? Are you sure its the lifter's making noise and not the timing chains? How is the oil pressure??
Definitely lifters are collapsed, did you not prime them prior to installation?
You need to remove VC and check for proper oil flow, you may have covered oil channel on install.
The machine shop said that the lifters were in great shape, I did not prime them. The head gaskets go on one way and I double checked them. I think I'll take it to a shop and have them check it out. I'm afraid that they will tell me it needs to come all apart for repair. (cant trust anyone these days)
