Hey guys?gals
Just picked up another 79 250 this time 2wd. Mostly for parts but thinkin on droppin or just using as a hauler for the highboy, anyways I cant seem to keep the ol'girl runnin. Some donkey was monkey'in around with the carb and put some cheap manual choke assembly on it, probably from the "help" section at a local parts store. She fires up strong and sounds really good but no matter what i do after 15 seconds or so it craps out I'll try it again after a couple pumps and she fires up only to last half of time. I'm thinkin 'idle jet' but really have no clue. I should probably tell you its a 351m with a 2bbl, I think it's the motorcraft-2bbl 2100 in the lmc cat. there was fuel weeping out of the diaphram in the accelerator pump I took it out and and checked to see if it had a tear but is was fine replaced it and seemed to have fixed the leak but the problem is still present any idea's??
theres nothing wrong with using a manual choke. i prefer them over all others. are you pulling the choke out and pushing it back in as soon as it fires or are you keeping it out part way until it warms up?
This may sound a little ridiculous but, have you verified the choke is in fact pulling off when you activate the cable? The cable may seem to move but it may not activate the choke plate. Start with the basics and we can go from there

The choke works, I was about ten mins to pulling the carb and rebuilding it if it wasn't for the rain. I tried to leave it(choke) in, pull it out so the choke plate was just cracked open, everything My 4x needs to warm up completely before it will even consider moving however this one fires then stalls no matter what I do.

It's raining real good here too! I'm thinking you might be chasing more of a significant vacuum leak than a choke issue. Any of the vacuum hoses look to be cracked, missing or just generally out of place? Was the truck running half way decent before or has it been doing this since you've picked it up?

I thought about a vacuum leak even my hippy buddy mentioned that, I was told it was, never actually heard it 'I know stupid' but it was/is for parts. I pm'd you my # and a little mess just so you know...
Well I pulled the carb, stripped it down and cleaned it out. I filled the bottom of a bucket with approx. 1/4" of muk and grim. Whoever had it apart the last time used silicone or something that wasn't fuel resistant to seal it along with an improper gasket, I used some gasket maker for a temp bandaid to see if it will work again. there was an insufficient seal beyond the carb into the intake giving me a bad vacuum so hopefully after i put it all back together she will stay running long enough that i can do whatever needs to be done before the snow drops. I'll let you know in a couple days how I made out!?!
