It would be rather lenghty to post here but generally the base stocks are more robust and the additve packages are different. I would suggest that you visit the API website at

What's the difference
can you use a oil designed for diesel in a gas engine? what would the difference be? any bad side effects?
Yes you can, as long as it also carries the API rating SL or SL,SJ for gasoline engines. Most diesel engine oils on the shelf are rated for both gasoline and diesel engines. CI-4/SL.
No harmful side effects, as they are approved for gasoline engines. They are generally a little more expensive though.
