this morning my truck had issues shifting from 1st to 2. didnt matter if i was easy on the throttle or hard. Either way i would have to come off the throttle so it would shift. I check the fluid and everything is fine but there is a weird smell, almost like a burnt clutch. i pulled the code with my super chip and it came as P0781. after i checked the fluid i drove it home and had no issues with it shifting, and when i got home is when i pulled the codes. Just looking for some answers and solutions
Is your truck an 01? Some of them had the mechanical diode that would fail and cause the 1st to 2nd shifting problem.
Here is some info I saved on it:
If the born date of your 2001 PSD, is before July 27, 2000, or after March 23, 2001, chances are fair to good you DON'T have the mechanical diode clutch. If your truck's born date is between those two dates, chances are extremely good that you DO have the mechanical diode clutch. Or, you can be lucky, and your tranny has been changed, by the factory, dealer, or prior owner.
Check the orange tag on the left side of your tranny, back by the tail housing. You will see a code on there. I think the fourth line starts off BD= build date. then, either 0 or 1, meaning 2000, or 2001. That is followed by a letter. A=Jan, B=Feb, etc. Then, and two diget number, meaning day of the month. Or, look for a remanufactured tag on the tranny
im sorry its a 2003 f350 dually. i have a 4in exhaust k&n cold air, and superchip. i have noticed the the truck has lost a little bit of power, and doesnt blow out as much black smoke.
You could try to change the fluid but not sure if that would help. If you have a burnt smell there could be internal damage. If it keeps doing it you are probably looking at a new transmission.
Its difficult to tell whats going on by the smell of the fluid, the first 4r100 I killed had bright red fluid. It smelled like bad seafood.
The second one had black fluid, and didn't smell burnt at all?
I would drop the pan and see whats in it.
P0781 is a 1 to 2 shift error, clear it and see if it comes back.
I cleared it when i got home, and drove it two hours later. when pulling out the driveway it took a while to shift into 2nd, then leaving my brothers house it ran like normal. I checked the codes once i got to the park and no codes, leaving the park it did it twice. I have not checked the code since i have got home.
