I was talking with my dad and he said that in most cases the I6 would out pull a V8, but he could not explain why, Could one of you out there help me out, also give reasons why you think the V8 would be better. I wanna see lots of responses to this
A 460 will definitely outpull the typical straight 6 all else being equal. But the straight 6 (300cubes?) is a very stout motor for it's displacement. Compared to a 302, it will probably outpull the 302, again all else being equal. The 6 is a low end torque engine. the 302 gets it's power from RPMs but has little low end torque. The 460 is all torque, and has high end power just from brute force not RPM.
The 6 is a good truck engine, the 302 is a good car engine, the 460 is for pulling freight trains and such.
Just my opinion, based on comments by other guys on this forum in the past, and a little hot rod experience in my youth.
The 300-6 Ford will pull better than a 302 Ford the 6 is good for a 1/2 ton P/U truck wouldn't want to have it in a 250-350 not enough power. The 460 would out pull a 300-6 anyday it would burn double the fuel but thats another story a V config engine can produce the same amount of torque just make the stroke the same length.
Long rod motors make better low end torque, the 300 has LONG rods! Comparing the 300 to a 460 is pretty unfair, suffice it to say that displacement being equal the motor with a better rdo/stroke ration will make better low end torque and almost every in-line engine has a better ratio than a comparably sized V engine.
