Adding aftermarket brake controller

First post for this truck. 2009, F550, DRW, 6.4l, auto, cab/chassis that has has been built out as a fire dept brush truck.

Question, looking at adding an aftermarket brake controller. What are some pointers and what can I look for in the way of harnesses and master cylinder, to see what I have and don't have and in general, which is the best approach ?

Thanks, also any pointers on brake controllers. I don't have any experience here.

You won't need to do anything with the master cylinder. The brake controller plugs in via wire only. Prodigy is a very popular brand for most and a great controller. I myself use their P3. Go to etrailer.com you can look up the harness you will need.

almost all of the trucks these days are prewired for trailer. they leave off the controller and the charging wire connection at the front of the truck.

to add a controller, there is a socket under the dash, and u buy an adapter cable to the controller you choose. I did this for my 06 F150 and my 08 and 2000 Suburbans and my 99 silverado.

for the charge wire, on the F150 I had to install a relay in the fuse box.
and connect a couple wires on the 99 silverado, and a fuse on the 2000 suburban. 08 charge wire was already active.

etrailer.com is killer for this stuff.. I also selected a prodigy controller and have it installed on my suburban now, as my f350 has the integrated TBC.(which is even better)

OK, thanks for the responses.

I have already checked the "charge wire" when I install the 7 wire socket, I have ignition switched power there.

In the research and post that I have read, is the master cylinder requirement only for the OEM controller ??

On an `09 F550 (with upfitter switches), where would the harness be hideing?

the master cylinder is only for the built in controller..

the harness adapter is a separate purchase item.

here is the list of etrailer.com choices
Ford F-350, 450, and 550 Cab and Chassis Brake Controllers with Custom Fit Wiring Harness - 2009 | etrailer.com

for example, see near the bottom of this page for the wiring installation
