Are all AWD systems on Explorers the same? (not 4wd). Mine spins the left rear and right front only...I assumed they ALL worked the same way...Is this true??
Since nobody replied, I might as well make it MORE complicated..what the hell...its got a D4 limited slip rear...it was pretty well buried in the last big blizzard we had, and i was in no mood to dig, so I just tried to drive it out...wound up with just LR and RF tires spinning...input I have had so far says its normal even with limited slip...which had "limited" transfer of power. Could I have a problem of which Im not even aware?? Vehicle runs like a champ!
It sounds like the clutch is burnt out in your rear axle
the same limited slip rear axle is used from 95 to 01.
It's very common for the rear axle clutch to give out. Most people forget to change there rear axle oil. the front axle uses a synthetic that is not supposed to need changing. But the rear uses a 90weight gear oil.
have the oil changed in the rear axle. they can check the clutch at the same time.
My clutch burnt out at 85,000 in my '95. I didn't have it repaired since I do not tow anything. The dealer told me that my whole rear axle was ready to go. But that was about 40,000 miles ago and it is still holding up fine
