I have a 99 4x4 XLT with 17in factory wheels and 265/70/17 Firestones. In the wake of the recall, I have decided to use this as an opportunity to go to aftermarket wheels. I will not do any body/susp lift at this time, and would like to get the max allowable rubber under the truck. I would like to go with a smaller diameter wheel and a fatter tire(would like a 33-12.50-15 on 15x10 combo. I was told that 15in wheels will rub the rear brake calipers, and that anything over 11in wide tires will rub the inner front wheelwells when turning. Does this sound right? I was recommended a 285/75/16 on 16x10or 16x8 wheels. This set up is about 1in taller and 1in wider than stock. I was hoping for a little more increase in size without a lift. I figured mail ordering a tire wheel set, getting ford's reimbeusment on the rubber, and maybe selling the hideous factory 17in chrome, I could get my total out of pocket below $500, and make the trade doable. Any suggestions?
I went with the LT 285/75/16 Bridgestone Dueler AT's on my '00 4x4 and man I've got to tell you they look awesome...I can't believe how many other Expedition owners/4x4 enthusiasts have made comments on the new look. There is absolutely no rub or steering problem with this size tire, but I don't think you can go any bigger without a lift. After installation, I cranked my torsion bars up a little to level the truck out. The thing I like best is the fact it doesn't look like I've got some jacked-up looking rig, just a nice clean looking truck with tires and wheels that fit perfectly within the wheel wells.
I HAVE 285/60 18 TOYO PROXES PERFORMANCE TIRES
NO RUBBING, MY TRUCK HANDLE GREAT ESPECIALLY IN THE RAIN.
GET RID OF THE FACTORY RIMS AND SPEND A LITTLE ON SOME 18
Thanks Buzzard. Since posting that message I have seen 2 late model F-150's with 285/75/16 and they do look bigger than on the shelf. So I think they would be just about what I am looking for. I am about 98% sure I am going with M/T Baja MTX's on 16x8 M/T Classic II's. Should look pretty awsome!
Hey man be very carefull with Mickey T's.... I bought the Baja Belted's 31x10.50x17 for my 97 Expy.... The load capability for these tires sucked............1600lb per tire.... Not enought for the Expy's...... I bought them online, huge problem tring to return the tires after they'd already been mounted.... Not to mention Mickey T's aren't meet for street driving... They don't balance very well, on not at all.... I'd talk to someone in person about the Mickey's before your purchase... Hope this helps you.....

97 5.4L Expy
K&N intake and soon to have true dual exhaust....
mickster, I don't know anything about those tires, but 97expy brought up some good points that you should check into.
As far as rim size, I think you hit the nail on the head. I stayed with the 16x7 stockers and the tires fit nicely but would fit a little better on an inch wider rim. I think the 16x10 would be too wide for the 285's. It's funny, I hated my rims with a passion when they had the little 255/70's on them, but now that I have the big meats with an aggressive tread pattern, I really like the stock rims...funny how that works.
