My 89 f 150 4x4 idles high while changing gears. Every time I take my foot off the gas to change into a higher gear the engine revs up at least 500 RPM before settling back to normal. It used to only do this when cold, but recently started doing it all the time.
When I stop, the idle goes up and down until the engine stalls.
My truck has a new motor, rebuilt injectors, full tune up, etc.
From what I've read here, it sounds like my idle air control valve, but I'm not exactly sure.
I don't want to take this thing in to the shop AGAIN. It's already cost me a fortune. It seems like every time I turn around there is something wrong with this truck (I also have the stupid silly putty tilt steering column, which stays at every position except the one I like).
The IAC is $20-80 at a parts store and is only held on by 2 scerws with 5/16" (8mm) heads, so it's really easy to replace yourself. Pull the codes and see if that's the problem. A Haynes manual will tell you how to test it with a multimeter.
You can see an exploded view of the steering column here, but it's more involved...
Start by cleaning the throttle body and IAC with an old toothbrush and some carb cleaner spray such as Carb-Medic.
In the throttle body make sure you get rid of all the black gunk around the throttle plates.
