i have a 93 1 ton 4x4 with a 460 5 speed(zf tranny) that recently lost the power to the backup lights. I tested the harness every where and couldnt get power so i put a new switch on the tranny but still can get power one either side of the plug wires coming from the switch on the tranny or any other spot in the harness.
Is there a relay under the hood that could be bad?
I am assuming that there is always power to the switch you changed and when you put it in reverse something in the transmission will depress the switch or release it depending the configuration, allowing power to the reverse lights.
If there is power to the switch. OHM out the new switch making sure it is a good switch, sometimes you can get a bad one. If that checks good, is there an adjustment on the switch? It may not be making any contact inside the trans to actuate the switch, when changing from fwd to reverse.
If you have power to switch and switch is actuating and working properly you need to look for a break from the switch back, if no power OHM from the switch to the fuse block looking for a break there.
Now I am by no means an electrician, these are just some of the steps I would take before pulling my hair out.
with the key turn on to power the turn signals, etc.. and in reverse i cant get power on either wire on the plug side of the switch. The new and old switch both had the round ball that is spring loaded and both have the same firmness to them.
Which one would be the fuse # for the backup lights? mine doesnt have the diagram on it.
OK I've been trying to figure this out all afternoon. After looking in my 97 owners manual and Hayes manual, I think it is fuse number 5 in the power distribution box in the engine compartment. According to the info I have here it is a 15A fuse. Its opposite of the relays and is the only 15A fuse in the first row.
