Crazy idle

Yesterday my 1987 F-150 (302) started to idle erratically and drove horrible. The rpms were all over the place and made driving home a bit tricky. I switched to the rear tank and it idled and drove fine. This leads me to believe that the front tank fuel pump may have a problem.

When I got home, one of the checks I performed was to check timing. For some reason, I could not see the mark so I switched the clamp to the other spark plug wires to see what was going on and I could see the timing mark from the #4 and #7 cylinders. I was able to fine tune the timing but can’t figure out why from those cylinders? I checked to see if the balancer was loose, but it seemed tight.

Any ideas on both problems?

OK so I was a dumb A$$. I was not looking at the right timing marks and after I realized my dumb mistake, timeing was set without hassles.

I am still confused to the fuel pump/selector issue. I have gone over several threads and have seen the diagrams, but I am still unsure how to perform the checks exactly. I do have to get a new volt meter as my last one no longer works (LED problem).

Can someone explain how to make the checks to see why it idles crazy from the front tank but fine from the rear tank?

I'd assume either fuel pump issues or the inner tank pick up screen is clogged...but it's just a guess.
