WTF timing!? 79 F250 400...please help
Checky out one of these dist. I bought one when I rebuilt my motor and they are the best for the buck. No external coil, and one wire hookup. all you need to do is take a volt meter, and find which wire out of the three or four is off when the keys off and on when its on. GM cap and rotors are cheaper too. I have two of theses with no issues. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-3...Q5fAccessories I agree on the air leaks, and pull and install one of these and set it right, and you should be golden. Holley makes a 4 barrel gasket thats .260 thick and is suppose to seal the best.
DUI makes good distributers, but they are way over priced. 369.00 is a bit much don't you think. 55.00 is more like it. Heck you could buy 6 of them and still be in less. MSD would be worth it if you had to go that way. Procomp is a big into fords, and they also have a msd knock off setup for about 275.00 box dist coil. check out picture in my garage to see what it looks like.
Yer right they are a lot more jfive. But most of the time ya get what ya pay for. Not that the $55 dollar one isn't good. Guess I would prolly try it first on something like this as the parts are interchangeable with HEI. But I have an MSD in my boat that was in the mud truck before that every time ya run it hard it brakes the cap and blows the ECM. and they ain't cheap.
Messed with the truck all day today...
Took the carb off again this morning and everything was soaked with gas...figured the float stuck open. Took the carb apart and realized there was no clip holding the needle valve to the float!!! It was definitely not there the first time I took this carb apart, so it hasnt been there since I bought the truck!!! WTF. Took a clip off the needle valve in my other carb, put it on and fired up the truck, but it kept dieing. Figured vacuum leak. Blocked off every source of vacuum I could find, got the truck to idle long enough to spray around everything with starter fluid and never made a difference.
Figured the only possibility was carb gaskets as mine were shot, so I bought new carb gaskets for above and below the egr plate/valve, tested the egr valve while I was there and it doesnt allow air to blow through while no vacuum applied. Put it all back together and it finally started idling without dieing. Adjusted the air/fuel mixture screws as best as I could, they are definitely not "normal". Tried timing it down and it runs like absolute garbage, so I just timed it by ear(which happens to be off the marks on the balancer).
It would idle for 10+ minutes, rev up on demand, and start everytime. Hooked the distri vacuum advance and the pcv system back up and it was the same. Need to hook the brake booster back up as well.
I'll test it in the morning when its cold and see what happens, still need to fix or replace the choke on it though.

Yup, just blows my mind that it ran good enough for me to drive it when I bought it, and all the random running its done with the needle valve doing whatever in the carb!
Now if I can just figure out the timing problem....but it seems to run fine as-is.
