I'm doing well in school, I'm actually doing this resto at school for the SKILLS USA team, but anyways, I think it's a c4trans but I'm not sure, it's a 3 on the tree standard trans, when my papa put the truck in the pasture it ran but the carb was messin up, so he took it off and nevergot around to fixing it, that's why it locked up, I took the tranny off today and everything looks good, the clutch is still in good shape as well as the pressure plate etc., I haven't tore into it yet but I was gonna put a standard rebuild kit in it, but I was wanderin about if I would need to beef it up any like put performance gears or anything in it while I've got it tore apart.
Beefing it up wouldn't be a bad Idea with the plans you have for it. If it is an auto it will be an C-4 or C-6. The easiest way to tell them a part is if the bell housing is removable then it is a C-4 if not C-6.
Its not a c4 or c6 if it has a clutch the c4 and c6 are automatics. The three speed manual trans is a toploader basically same case as the legendary 4 speed top loader. So for rebuilt parts check the web for top loader rebuild kits.
That 3 speed would be ok for dd, but not so much for any drag racing.
They are a pretty good trans, so I would leave it alone and concentrate on the rest of the truck for now.
They are all synchro, so they make a decent basic trans.
There is no "beefing up" a 3 speed manual trans. Synchros and bearings can be replaced if needed. That trans is plenty strong as it is, as long as bearings are good.
If your 302 just got some water in it, you may be able to get by with just a hone and new rings and bearings to get it going. Just a thought....
i tore down the trans today and everything inside looks immaculate, this truck only had 71xxx origonal miles so that probably explains it lol, anyways now im gonna get new bearings and seals and new clutch and be done with it. ive decided just to put gears in the rear, anyone have any ideas on a good high speed gear to run. as far as the motor i got the heads off today and saw the problem, the #7 piston was the only one with any rust on the walls. i sprayed some pb blaster and got it unfroze and pulled the crank and pistons off, so now all that it is now is a block, i steamed the heads to clean them and tomorrow ill do the block. anyways im thinkin about boreing it out .30 over, getting alluminum pistons and rods, getting the heads ported and polished, new cam. i already bought a carb and intake for it but some one told me that the carb was too big. its a 750 double pumper holley, and the intake is an edelbrock 4 inch high rise, any advise on cam or carb i should use will be gratly appreciated.
thanks yall
With your trans, I would expect to find a 3.50 gear in that truck.
I would drive it with that for a while. If you go to a taller gear like a 3.25 or 3.0, you might have a tough time taking off in first, or real trouble in reverse.
Find out what it has, run it, make the changes, if any, based on what you find.
that was one great running engine, it had a Hughes C4/stall behind it and would
hit second so hard(6500 rpm shift) I sure do miss it but the 71 will be there eventualy
and does anyone know about putting a 351 crank in my 302. my dad said the in chevy motors he used to take a 400 small block crank and put it in his 350 with new rods and pistons and it made it a 383 stroker, and he said he wasnt sure if i could do it with a ford, so any suggestions?
