Tire ? . Recently bought a 03 x, it has 265/75/16 kelley safari tires semi aggressive tread pattern previous owner just installed tires less than 10,000 miles ago. He stated he lost 2-3 mpg after he installed them. He thought the previous tires were 285/75/16 all season tires. Would like to keep tires for winter driving but buy new rims and tires for rest of year driving. I know 285 are taller, but not by much. Any suggustion on tire sizes, dont want to go wider. 265`s handel great i think there 10 ply little stiff. looking for a smooth ride and tire good in rain.. Dont want to drop $700 on a set of tires and be disappointed. Any help would be great....
You will get a 100 opinions on this.......I like 285.......Cooper ATR.......BFG AT KO ....is good too.....doesnt wear as long ......what are you doing with the EX ??.....snow ? off road ?? rock.....mud ?? etc
I love my michelin ltx 265/75 no loud road noise. They are 10 ply I run as Ford recommends and get a great ride, when I tow the tt I run them up to 70psi.
Ex is going to be used for weekend trips and vacation. 95% highway got a jeep for off road. Mechanic friend of mind agreed that an 285 all season tire shound get alot better mpg than 265`s with an slightly aggressive tread patern.
If you Ex has 4.30s like mine, you won't see much change from 265s to 285s. The taller will drop the engine speed at 70 about 160-200rpm. Remember that they will throw off the speedometer about 3-4mph if you don't have it corrected.
I'm currently running Cooper Discoverer ATR 285/75-16 on the truck after replacing the BFG Long Trails of the same size that failed last month on vacation. The Cooper has a wider footprint than the BFGs did by about an inch, and the ATRs tread pattern is more aggressive than the BFGs. Fuel mileage with the new tires is down about 1.5mpg, partly because they are new and have more rolling resistance, partly because they are a little more aggressive. On the other hand, the ride is significantly improved, and the truck's handling characteristics are crisp and precise with the truck feeling very sure footed cornering at speed.
