Hit the Jackpot but have a couple of questions

So I find this small junkyard with multiple of everything that I need and go talk to the owner about $. Not being 100% sure of what I was needing, I wanted a ballpark $ amount for the parts I was looking at. The owner wouldn't give me a number without knowing exact parts so I did the research last night and am heading back. The best part of the whole thing was one of the employees has built 10-12 1967-1979 Ford trucks. He took me around the yard again and showed me specific front ends he already had cut off. I was just looking at the trucks I could recognize.

1. What price could I expect to pay for a brand new never installed integrated power steering gearbox? (its been sitting on their shelf since the 70's)

2. Found 2 1967 doors in great shape. Everything works on them. I know they are a 1 year wonder making replacement parts harder to find. Can the doors be converted to '68 using the parts I have? Or should I just worry about it if and when something fails on the door?

After looking at some parts in the yard, the guy said he thinks he has some new parts in the building somewhere and proceeds to find the integrated steering box and a set of rotors. I think it is also a small maintenance shop too. I think they may have been purchased but never installed and have just sat there until tomorrow. I will find out "The Rest of the Story" and let you know.

So what price would be fair for the steering gear box?

I found out the info on the doors too. Just took a little more digging.

I also found a cab but it is out of state and would need to be shipped. $600 + $400 shipping. Little to no rust, all glass, both doors and all gauges, with wiring harness.

Still debating on if I could find a decent one closer + repairs for less than $1000.

D You are rambling, ask specific questions.

Buy a 70s donor truck to get all of your parts from, some will need some rebuilding like the brakes, but will give you all of the parts needed. While a yard will cut this part or that you will not get everything and will have to go back.

I paid $500-600.00 for my donor(s) sold body and other parts that I didn't need and recovered my purchase.

I have done this enough to know you do not want to peace meal your purchases.

What engine & tranny does your truck currently have or do you want to end up with?

1). Which integrated PS box are you refering to...Bendix or Ford?

Sitting on a shelf that long, it's prolly a Bendix unit, which was used on 1966/68 F100/250 2WD's, and early production 1969 F100/250 2WD's only.

Any gearbox that has set on a shelf for 30 years will need all new seals and gaskets, since all the originals will have dried out by now.

These two P/S gearboxes are totally different from one another, and regardless of what it is...you don't want it, because you will still need all the other parts.

Read what John says above, get everything from a donor and stay FAR AWAY from Bendix P/S...replacement parts are slim and none.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2). You cannot use specific 1968/72 parts in 1967 doors because the 1967 door shells themselves are different.

1968/72's have door lock *****. 1967: You push the inside handles forward to lock the doors from the inside.

1967/72: The following is the same: Outside door handles, upper/lower door hinges, vent window division bars and all the weatherstrips.

Everything else is either specific to 1967 only, or to 1968/72.

1968/72 doors will bolt onto 1967's and vice versa.

What engine & tranny does your truck currently have or do you want to end up with? John

I get what you are saying. I guess with my lack of space I was trying to get just what I needed, but looking at the big picture ($) a donor is the smarter way to go.

How close does the donor have to be to what I have?

I currently have a 4x4 w/360FE and NP435 tranny but most I trucks I have found are 2WD 351 and auto tranny.

NumberDummy - The steering box is the Ford box - He wanted $300 for it

For a 4wd, I'm gonna let someone else recommend the donor.

Don't know much about the 4x4's but I am pretty sure you can take the power steering from anything up to 77 or 79 (not sure if it's a easy as PS box, steering colunm and control/i-beam arms or if you would need suspension parts as well). What I hear is in 4x4 it is only power assist and prone to leaking when it gets older.

There shoud be a thread in this section or in the '73/'79 about converting to full power steering. I would try to find that thread.

P/S introduced in 4WD's in 1973, but...

1973/77 F100's & 1975/77 F150's used Power Assist P/S.

Power Assist uses a separate control valve & ram cylinder. The manual steering gearbox is used, because it has nothing to do with Power Assist.

1978 was the first year Ford P/S was available in 4WD's.

No 351W's were factory installed in F150/350 2WD/4WD's and Bronco's until 1981.

1980/83 F100: The largest V8 available was the 302.
