I have an 83 2WD F250 460 4bbl all stock 99k mi that has run great and now suddenly developed the following symptoms.
Upon starting cold:
1>loping slow idle (throttle positioning does not extend to push idle up)
2>ultra rich exhaust
3>upon warming up engine still runs ultra rich.
I am thinking vacumn. Is there a logical steo by step procedure to find the problem? I have inspected hoses and connectors for missing, broken or loose and have not seen anything obvious. I checked the intake manifold for loose bolts and found none.
After you get it warmed up, pull the aircleaner off. On top of the carb on the front two barrels there should be a flapper door. This is the choke. It should be standing up wide open. If it's shut or nearly shut, this would cause a rich condition. You can spray some wd40 on the passenger side of the carb to see if it will free up. Or you may have a loose wire going to the round black choke housing on the passenger side. Also if you want to experiment, mark the position of the round black housing, then loosen the three screws a little bit, and turn the housing to the "leaner" direction as it's marked. Then when you goose the throttle linkage, the choke ought to open up. But if you have a problem with the choke system, and the choke does not close when the engine is cold, it will make the engine very cold natured till it warms up.
