So.. I drove my 2003 350 250 mi pulling a travel trailer (8K lbs). Pulled fine except the check engine light came on - I had put it in "tow" mode on the chip.... I drove for a while, stopped, drove some more then put it back into "stock" mode on my chip and no more light. Drove about anothe 100 mi..About 50 miles of driving after I dropped the trailer it started shifting funny, then wouldn't shift up from 2nd. I turned around toward the Ford dealer I passed 5 miles back - how's that for luck?- and on the way it started shifting better but no OD. They put in on the computer and it showed a bad solenoid. Ford hot-line said replace the solenoid and if that doesn't fix it --- tear it down..... Ugh.
Question is: Will I know right away if the solenoid fix was THE fix or do I get half way home pulling my rig and find out? and how long would a rebuild take....I'm 250 miles from home and have a business to run. Fortunately I can stay in my rig while I'm waiting
Did the dealer say the solenoid was the cause of the SES light?
was there any other trans codes?
How does the fluid look/smell
How many miles on it.
Its a tough call, the soleniod pack is a easy fix, if the trans is in good shape I would just replace it. (a new one is around $300)
However, if they find some crap in your pan, and you have alot of miles on the trans you may want to go deeper.
Its not easy to spend a few grand at one sitting, but if your using the truck for buisness, and your travling, the last thing you want is to be stuck again.
Good luck, let us know what happens
Typically a rebuild will take from 2-4 days, Ford may suggest a reman.
Did the dealer say the solenoid was the cause of the SES light? NOT SURE, THE SES LIGHT WAS OFF WHEN I LEFT IT
was there any other trans codes? NOPE, IN FACT I WENT TO A REGULAR GARAGE BEFORE TURNING AROUND AND THE GUY PUT HIS MACHINE ON IT AND CAME UP WITH NO CODE AT ALL.
How does the fluid look/smell THE FIRST GUY SAID NOT BAD`AT ALL
How many miles on it. 64K
Frank, his truck is at the dealer, what do you think they will find wrong with his truck? I got odds on a rebuilt trans.
Your on the right track Rick, From my experiance the dealer goes for blood.

64k is still relatively young. It may just be a solenoid pack?
I have a trans that wont shift, and Im getting no codes either....so
I do know that they can bench test a solenoid.
Im hoping that is your problem, its cheap/easy/ to replace.
