Question sending unit resistance

I'm trying to diagnose a hot running engine on an '86 FI 302. At least the coolant temp is READING that things are hot.

The previous owner of the truck had rad, themostat and sending unit replaced. I ran a new wire to the thermostat last night and things still appear to be the same.

My guess is that the shop would not have replaced all the above stuff if the coolant temp was "normal". So I'm trying to find a way to measure coolant temperature myself. What kind of resistance should I be getting out of the sending unit at normal temperatures?

Has anyone had this experience?

Thanks,

Mike

The sending unit isn't calibrated (which is why the gauge isn't marked with degrees), so no two will necessarily have close to the same resistance at the same temp. You can get a decent A/C thermometer at WM or a parts store with a long probe that you can stick into the radiator (on the hot side with the higher hose) or tie a wire onto it and dangle it into the fill neck (but it'll be showing the cool side temp).

So would I do better to buy one of those thermometers or is it possible to get a well-calibrated sending unit and aftermarket gauge?
