Whats everyone's thoughts on synthetic oil?....
My rig has 119k miles on it. Its a 5.4 Triton lifted 6". I have always ran Mobil1 in all my vehicles. I want to switch my truck over....
Should I or Shouldn't....Thats the 64 thousand dollar question....
Hey Bill (bpounds).
I noticed you did some work to your overhead console. Did you put in the whole unit? Cause mine didnt come with one and I can get my hands on a grey one that will match my interior. Can I put it in and have it operate correctly even tho it was factory installed?.....

I bought the one that came out of an F150, so it just has the outside temp, a compass, and the storage compartments. It does not have MPG or MTE. On the newer trucks it is pretty hard to get those things to work. But on your '03 I think he can set you up with one that has all those things. Either one you wish, it will fit your truck and look factory original. This is one of my favorite mods that I have done.
I am in the process of checking the oils with Blackstone Laboratories.
The Motorcraft after 5000 miles was worse than Rotella after 10,000 miles.that was advised to run for additional 2,000.
Than I run Mobil 1 ESP Formula M, what is specific oil for high performance diesels and after 12,000 miles the test found slightly higher iron in it, so they recommended immediate change.
Now I am on the second doze of synthetic and waiting to get close to 10k to send for lab test again.
That sound disappointing for synthetic oil, but switching to synthetic at high mileage (over 200k) often shows some old stuff washing out. If second test on synthetic will not improve -I am going back to Rotella.
Here is the last report, although the script scramble the chart.
KRIS: Iron, from steel parts, increased significantly in the latest sample from your Ford. If you didn't change
anything between the last sample and this one (you did the same type of driving), then iron indicates excess
wear. But if you did any heavy towing or something along those lines, maybe the iron is normal. Lead is still
above average, though on a per-mile basis it improved a little. Upper-end wear is okay. Since the extra iron
makes the fill somewhat abrasive, we suggest changing this oil now and dropping back down to 10K miles
to monitor. No contaminants found.
I run synthetic in my 6.0 as well. Not for longer life, not for "protection", but simply because it has a lower cold viscosity than a conventional can achieve.
I know you guys all believe all the oil marketing crap that gets spewed out there. You got your Amsoil worshipers, you got your Royal Purple zealots, and on the low end you got your Mobil 1 converts. One thing those special oils do a great job of is separating money from leather.
I have never worn out an engine. So what's the point? Protecting the next owner?
Thanks Bill, I checked out the site ya sent me, and I'm all over that!
Heres another one for ya....
I have the regular stock telescoping mirrors on my truck, their power. But I would like to swap them out for ones that are heated with turn signal in them. Question is....is the factory wiring there, or would there be an extensive wiring process involved with upgrading my stock mirrors?

I'm one of the Amsoil worshipers, I do it for the lighter viscosity and longer drain intervals. With my GMC I was using Signature series oil with an EA oil filter and only needed to change my oil once a year. I also liked the cold weather starting better running the 0W30 full synthetic. After I figure out if my 2010 Super Duty is a dud or not I'll be using the Signature series 0W20 in that....does it help....who knows but in all my vehicles I can say it doesn't hurt. I run Amsoil products in everything, they seem to work well and the prices are fair if you have a preferred customer account.
