I was wondering if it's possible to add another alternator to my 83 F-100, 300 ci. It has a factory one, I don't know the amps. The other one is factory from an '80 F-100. I already have the air pump un-hooked, so I could mount it there. But how do I wire it? Do I need an isolator or something? Thanks for any help!
Why do you want to do this? Do you have a lot of electrical accessories requiring more amps? If so, I would suggest a high output alternator. This would be much easier than two alternators (if that can even be done). I've never heard of dual alts., but it seems like an unnecessary headache. I would just go with the high output alt.
Well, yeah I have a big stereo and my small alt. isn't the greatest. I know I can get a high output, but I don't have that much money! And since I have two already, I figured it could be done, I've heard of it on emergency vehicles and stuff. You're right though, probably a big head ache.
Yes, it's much more of a pain than most people think. The easier way is to upgrade your battery (I recommend Ford MotorCraft Silver Series) and minimize the resistance between it and the high-draw accessories. Relays are the most common way to do this, and they're very effective if wired properly.
