I have a 2000 Excursion v10 4x4 with over 170,000 miles. I tow an 8,000lb travel trailer every chance I get. I just blew the spark plugs out of my head. Going to rebuild the heads. Any ideas to get more torque while I have it apart? I have rebuilt the trans, have 4:56 gears, banks headers and exhaust.
How many blown plugs and did they all occur at once? Who changed the plugs and what did they do wrong? I think most failures are the plugs come loose over time and unscrew and then pop out. I am asking this so I know what not to do when I change my plugs. I think Timesert had an internal insert for the plugs that you install from the inside when you have the head off. It would be cool if they would give you an insert that would thread the whole depth of thread instead of half like in the early versions of this motor like you and I have. I think the older heads have the same depth of material but only the lower half was threaded. The upper part was of the thread boss was cut away to make it faster to install plugs on the assembly line.
You could put in some bigger valves and maybe a torque cam. Raising the compression might help some but you will need higher octane gas.
I have not found anything cost effective for the PI 2V's..... They are just really well designed and optimized for real world performance from the factory. I usually clean up and tweak ports everytime I have an engine apart - this time I didn't as I couldn't see anything significant enough to warrant cleaning up!
A good 5 angle valve grind may get a bit. Not sure how much you can deck the head to increase compression.
