Does anyone know a good web site to buy parts for rebuilding heads for a 400? What is the difference between plain cast iron valve guides and spirled cast iron valve guides? I read somewhere that bronze valve guides wear prematurely, any truth to this? Thanks again
Steps
1) Buy peterson 4-wheel offroad
2) Read mag, find ad for Performance Automotive Warehouse
3) Order P.A.W. catalog (it's the engine builders Bible)
OR........
Goto "WWW.pawengineparts.com" and order a Catalog.
This should give you all the parts and prices you need. Take your time, plan, and research your build up. Talk to the machine shop, and tell them what you want.Spreading the cost over a couple months gives you time to figure out everything. Ask Q's, and in the end, you will have something that works.
Clearcutter, Look in your local yellow pages or ask around about a good reliable local machine shop. Your local parts stores can usually hook you up with someone or an establishment. Then go there and scope them out, talk with them about what your wanting, see who seems to be the most knowledgeable and actually listens to you about your issues. They can handle getting the parts you need.
Your just looking for someone to recondition your stock heads aren't you?
I think that it will be mostly stock, although I read the threads and web sites about porting and polishing and that looks like I could handle it and might try it. I have been by a machine shop here in town that I have been told is the best one around, need to go by it again it's been a while maybe tomorrow. So bronze is a bit much? about $60 more than cast ones I think. Any thoughts on the spirl vs. plain guides? I would think the plain would last longer due to more surface area in the guide contacted.......???? Don't know suppose the machine shop would know though. Just trying to save or (spread out) the cost over several months by buying parts myself a little at a time.
Clearcutter, I had a 351M in an 81 Bronco, that was built by a professional engine builder, he used bronze guides in it. ( I bought the vehicle off of him, he pulled his Ford race cars with it. )
I'll go with beartracks here, on oil usage. This motor never used a drop of oil. It had about 50,000 miles on it when my 16 year old daughter turned it over on an icy road. ( She was not hurt at all thankfully, she had her seatbelt on. ) You could run it over on oil changes and it did not matter. No oil usage what so ever.
