I'm looking at both a 99 v10 and a 2003 v10, both with about the same mileage. Are there any major differences between the motors either reliability, power, or design-wise?
Ok, found part of the answer. Looks like the 99's had a little bit less performance. So with different heads, did that change the sparkplug or exhaust manifold stud issue?
'99 is non PI heads, 2000+ has the PI heads. Better torque and hp. Good things.
Exhaust studs: No difference. They still rust if exposed to lots of moisture and salt.
Spark plugs: I believe the '03 would have the additional plug threads which are quite a bit more idiot proof.
But... they are still aluminum heads and as with ANY engine with aluminum heads, if any person at any time overtorqued them while installing them, they will have damaged the threads so it is possible to spit a plug. Fortunately, by 2003 most "mechanics" had learned their lessons (can't go by "feel" and torque the bejeebers out of them like you can in an iron head...) and were far less likely to screw the job up. Reports of plug spitting in the '03's and later seem very sparse.
Go for the 2003 for all the reasons already mentioned. Not that the '99 is a bad platform, but overall, if I had the choice and the money, and the prices were about the same, it's a no-brainer.

Yeah, definitely leaning towards the 03. It's a bit more, but it's also a crew cab lariat where the other is a supercab XLT and the additional cab room would be nice for the kids and dog.
