Rotor Eater

Here I am. Me and my 2002 Ford F250.
I've had it since 2004.
Having some brake issues and found your site.
Now to find a fix for it.
My Truck Eats rotors. Big chunks falling off them. Front is on it's 3rd set. backs on second. Wondering if I'm the only one.
Does anyone else have the same problem. Am I just getting stuck with junk. It happened on the original rotor and now on the replacements.

Welcome to FTE, Norman.

Chunks falling off the rotor?????

Who is doing the work and where are you getting the rotors? I never heard of this one. What are you using the truck for?

The originals were from Ford they were trw.
I have done the work on the truck. Calipers work fine. Every time I do the brakes, Everything gets cleaned. Sliders and all.
The last sets of rotors were from Napa and Car quest. I was running the mid grade brake , but have switched to the cheap pads in hopes of wearing out the pads and not the rotors.
I will take a few pictures of the rear ones I just did.
I was driving to a from work with it, 20 miles a day. Truck gets used at least once a week now. Moving stuff from old house to new. Also during the winter I plow my driveway and 2 others.
Truck is parked on a blacktop drive way.
I have also replaced many of the brake lines, as everywhere there was a clip holding them, it rusted away. Also had to replace one of the front lines, just after the braided section it split open. No rust, just split.

Is there a way to attach pictures? Or do they need to be linked?

The fronts looked very similar. I replaced the rotors and pads, and less than a year later, around 10,000 miles they were bad again. The pads on the other hand had lots of life left.

Don't know about Car Quest but NAPA's heavy duty rotors are some of the best you can get w/out going to $150 a rotor. Those rotors look defective and should be warranted.

I go through brakes as well because of my driving style, so I will usually warp my rotors and get them resurfaced twice at the most, but never like those pictures.

Last time I went with Power Slot Cryogenic rotors and the Hawk HD pads. I was very disappointed with the rotors after paying $150 a piece, would not recommend them. I would recommend the Hawk HD and the other version LTS I think their called.

I tried ceramic; little dust, lower stopping power, increased heat and warped rotors.

I tried Performance Friction Carbon Metallic, too much dust, stopped GREAT, ate the rotors down to nothing.

The next time I do mine I'm going to do NAPA rotors and Hawk LTS pads.

I got these Napa ones.

Rotor - Rear - Ultra Premium
Product Line: NAPA ULTRA PREMIUM BRAKE PARTS

They seem to be holding up great so far.

The ones in the picture are the factory rear rotors.
I can't even get them resurfaced. I'm hoping with the cheap pads thet this will stop now, but I have my doubts.
The front rotors cost $90 each, that's way to much for me to be spending on rotors. The rears I just bought were 54 each.
I would much rather spend the 24 for a set of pads, than replace these rotors again.

I also have an open car trailer that has brakes. But I have only used it 4 times in the last 4 years, and only about 20 miles each time. These brakes make me nervous now about pulling anything behind the truck. I would really like to start using my race car again.

Thats typical for rear rotors on these rigs.... Not usually that bad... It starts as pitting....And gets worse over time... Spend a little on decent parts and they will pay you back over time with less repeating of the same job and the big thing.. Peace of mind.... These trucks cost a little to maintain properly but over the long haul they pay you back...

Looks like those rotors got WAY hot, to the point of altering the molecular stucture of the metal which may have been under-treated originally.
Scary.

BTW, no way would I put the cheap rotors on these heavy trucks.

First off, welcome!

In my 30 years of wrenching, I have never seen anything like that. Sorry I don't have an answer... but to stir possible answers:

A long shot: I am on the snowless dry coast... For those of you in snow and salt land, is this something you see? I'm thinking corrosion/rust as a primary factor?

Another question: Are BOTH sides of the rotors affected, or just one side? One side points toward a caliper seizing/binding issue.
