I noticed that sometime around 99 or 2k, the Expeditions look to have a much lower ride height than my '98. Was there a suspension change over this time? I noticed another 4X4 in a parking lot was close to 3" lower than my truck.
It has something to do with the load leveling system. it's an option most EB has which levels the truck when you have cargo. it also drops the height of the vehicle when parked for ease in entering the vehicle.
This was a problem with my 99 XLT with towing package and road leveling suspension. I was particularly concerned with the reduced ground clearance on the gas tank (about 7 3/4 " at worst point) which concerned me for my trips on the back roads of Colorado. What I did was:
1) Went to the dealer who adjusted my air shocks up 1 3/4" which raised my rear end -- this brought my ground clearance up to 8 1/4" where the lowest point of tank was. Believe it or not, the adjustment was free on warrenty (may have just had a good Ford rep handling it).
2) I put 265/75 R16 tires on the vehicle (for other reasons) and this added more ground clearance.
My gas tank ground clearance is now at 9 1/4."
Expeditions with standard coil shocks ride higher in rear -- which allows them to compress as you add cargo weight. The coil shocks have a greater travel (better I guess on rough roads) compared to only 3" or so on the air shocks.
